Changing the diet after Vaser Lipo surgery

Naples - Tuesday 7 Apr 2020 - Dr. Francesco Somma

Are you considering undergoing Vaser liposuction?

No doubt you will also be thinking then about how best to maintain the results of your liposuction procedure. Here are three questions my patients often ask me:

  • Will I need to change my diet?
  • Are there some particular eating habits to follow after Vaser liposuction?
  • Should I modify my workout to prevent weight gain?

Some lifestyle modifications after the liposculpture procedure are helpful to support optimal healing and ensure that results are maintained.

One of the key points is nutrition!

A healthy, balanced diet is essential to facilitate your body's healing after any surgery, including Vaser liposuction. It is also essential to help ensure lasting results and prevent future weight gain. Not to mention the value a healthy diet has on your overall health and well-being.

Here are some suggestions for dieting after Vaser Liposuction and other similar cosmetic procedures to sculpt the body.

1. Macronutrient balance.

Often diet and weight loss advice revolves only around calories. Certainly calories play an important role in excess fat loss, but they are only one small equation in a big puzzle.

Balancing your macronutrients (carbohydrates, protein, and fat) is the foundation of a healthy diet. When there is the right balance, the energy from your food lasts longer, you feel more satisfied, and you get greater vitality.

The proportion of macronutrients differs from person to person, however, as a general rule each meal should consist of about 1/4 protein, 1/4 starchy carbohydrates such as grains and root vegetables, 2/4 vegetables, and a small amount of unsaturated fats (extra virgin olive oil first and foremost).

If you are not sure if you are balancing your meals well, talk to an expert.

2. Quality protein

Protein is essential for our cell structure, muscle development, and hormone production. During recovery after Vaser liposuction surgery, protein is especially important for healing the treated tissues.

Choose a combination of animal proteins such as white meat, fish, and eggs, as well as plant proteins such as legumes, quinoa, hemp, nuts, and seeds.

3. Omega-3 fatty acids

Although Vaser liposuction is not as invasive as traditional liposuction, still the treated areas will be the site of inflammation, mild swelling and bruising.

Increasing intake of omega-3 rich foods can help reduce inflammation, particularly after Vaser liposuction surgery. Sources of healthy fats include fatty fish such as salmon, tuna, sardines and oily fish in general, chia seeds, walnuts, flax seeds and olive oil.

4. Fiber

In any surgery, including Vaser liposuction, there is a use of anesthetics, and these drugs lead to some degree of constipation.

Foods rich in fiber not only help normalize bowel movements, but are critical for intestinal flora. This all helps support metabolism and nutrient absorption to improve your mental health and help in maintaining a healthy weight.

5. Water

Drinking plenty is critical after Vaser liposuction surgery and is essential for healing. Adequate water intake will help you reduce post-operative bruising and swelling, reducing recovery time.
